On New Consecration Sunday (Nov. 18)

I was in Stein Mart shopping for a certain someone’s birthday the other day (seems to be a yearly obligation) and sauntering through the home goods section, I saw this sign: “Celebrate Yesterday, Live Today, Dream Tomorrow.”

I’m not in the practice of taking advice from Stein Mart, but in this case it seems safe enough. Maybe it’s trite, but surely it’s true. While not everything in our past can be celebrated, there is always much that can be. And living today is what Jesus taught. And dreaming for
tomorrow… well that’s all to do with the content of your dreams. If they are worthy then dreams are just another word for faith.

It is in this spirit that we celebrate New Consecration Sunday with our annual Thanksgiving Dinner. On Sunday morning (November 18) Jerry Cain, president of Judson College, will be preaching. We will have time in the service for stewardship commitments to be made. This is our “dreaming tomorrow” knowing that God has called us to giving in order that we may continue the work of love. All adult Bible study classes will gather for a plenary session (and brunch) that morning as well. We will “live today” in fellowship and food.

And that evening we will gather at 6:00 pm for our “Thanksgiving Celebration.” This will be a catered meal. We need your reservation and we’d like everyone to come (there is no charge for the dinner). This is our “celebrating yesterday” part. We have much to be grateful for. It has been a good year at KBC. From the blossoming of our children’s music (Summer Song,
Sunday nights), to the special youth programs (Kenya, for example), to Hands On Kirkwood, we have much for which to give thanks.

If you haven’t yet made your reservation, please call the church today. Sunday (November 11) is the deadline. I hope you can be there. But more importantly, I hope that we will all commit ourselves to live grateful, celebratory, and faithful lives. (And isn’t it good to know that God even speaks to you while shopping…)
