Hands On Kirkwood

If you are looking for more information on specific Hands on Kirkwood events, click here .

I remember the old naval movies (and maybe Star Trek…?) where there was liberal use of the phrase: all hands on deck, all hands on deck!

This is my call for October 13, 2007. I’d like ALL KBC hands “on Kirkwood.” We’re moving forward to express a day of Christian service and mission to our community and we need you “on deck.” At print-time we have over 130 folks signed up, but we like to reach our goal of 200! [now at 190!!!] Call the church and we’ll sign you up!

I’ve said this quite often, but it bears repeating. When I meet people in the community and they learn that I’m the pastor of KBC, they invariably (and I mean invariably!) say one of two things. One: you are at the church with the great preschool (and yes, I say with a smile). Two: you are at the church which had to sue the city to build a parking lot (yes, I say with a frown).

It’s great that people in Kirkwood think so well of our WEE Center. I’m also aware that they’ll eventually forget about the 12 year parking lot ordeal (by 2050 or so). But all of us would like to be known as the church where Christ’s presence is real, where God and people are loved with a genuine passion.

A couple of months ago when there was a gay parade in Saint Louis, the Post-Dispatch ran a story with this byline: “It rained on our parade, and the Baptists were happy.” Whatever your ethical position on gay parades, you certainly don’t think that Jesus is happy to be associated with people who rain on parades. I certainly don’t. I believe that Christ is most effectively represented when we put our hands to work for those who need help. We can help them AND help others know that our “middle-name” is not about condemnation, it’s about immersing ourselves in the ways of Jesus.

Jesus said: “in as much as you do it for the least of these, you do it for me.” We say in response: “let’s find the “Jesus-reps” in our community, and let’s be the presence of Christ to them.”

All hands…!
