Bosnian Ministry
The Bosnian Ministry is located in South St Louis, where there is an estimated Bosnian population of 60,000, the largest Bosnian people group outside of Bosnia. A majority of these people are Muslim and many are Romany Gypsy.
An integral part of the Bosnian Ministry is a Food Pantry operated by KBC with help from several other churches. The Food Pantry’s primary goal is to provide food to needy people. Approximately 75 boxes of food are distributed each week. Those involved in this ministry believe Matthew 25:34-35, which calls for Christians to respond to human need. It is hoped that being the presence of Christ among unbelievers will cause some to turn to him.
A nurse visits the food pantry once a month, providing health screenings and health education. A Missouri Extension representative comes two or three times each month to teach nutrition. She uses food from the food boxes to prepare and serve a meal to the people attending her class.
108 KBC members including youth serve on 8 teams that pick up food on Friday and Saturday and fill boxes with food to be given out each Saturday. In addition, the following churches volunteer on one of the 8 teams: Third Baptist, Kingshighway United Methodist, Green Park Community, Vandover Baptist, South County Baptist, First Baptist - Dupo, Concord Baptist, Parkway Baptist, Fee Fee Baptist, and Southwest Baptist.
The food pantry and the other evangelical outreach programs have been in progress for 5 years. To date, no one has accepted Christ. Several are discussing Christianity with Sasa Zivanoc (the Bosnian minister). Several have expressed a desire to convert, however, fear of rejection by family and the Muslims has kept them from becoming Christians. Sasa and Mira continue to visit in the homes and hold Bible discussions in their home. Sasa and Mira provide the following services to the Bosnian people: Assisting people in completing various government forms and
applications for employment, referring people to local agencies for help, picking up and delivering items of furniture for people who make requests. KBC members and other participating churches provide the donated furniture.
KBC along with Vandover Baptist, Jewell Baptist, Southwest Baptist, Third Baptist, Kingshighway Methodist, CBF of Missouri and the Baptist General Convention of Missouri fund the program. KBC funds the food pantry (purchase of food from the St Louis Food Bank at 10 cents a pound) and Sasa and Mira’s salary for running the food pantry. The Sisters of Charity Foundation have given donations for the last 2 years. Donations have been received from KBC members and other local organizations.
Christy Methodist Church will be sold and the food pantry will move to Jubilee Church at 4228 S Kingshighway Blvd in May. Jubilee Church members will volunteer in the Bosnian Ministry. The church will also provide office space for Sasa Zivanoc.
We are in need of additional volunteers to work on a rotating schedule on Saturday mornings in the food pantry.
Please pray about this opportunity to be a missionary in South St Louis!
