This initiative is based on a movement called "In As Much." The goal is to involve the entire church body in a one day "mission blizt" where we take the church to the community - meeting needs with helpful hands (and hearts).
We have almost reached our goal of 200 volunteers!!! Here are the projects:
Current Projects
(as of 9/7/07)
Kid Safety (Amy Alexander) - This project will be held inside the Great Hall. It is held in conjunction with the Kirkwood Police Department. An officer will be on-site to help complete child identification packets and answer questions.
Animals (Barb Hethcote) - This project will be held outside on KBC grounds. This project includes a pet blessing by Scott and a dog agility demonstration.
Homebound (Amy Easterling) – This project will take a group of volunteers to homes of Kirkwood residents that are homebound. There are a variety of opportunities to help such as performing simple household chores, visitation and winterizing homes. There will also be a group of volunteers needed prior to October 13th to make crafts for delivery to these residents.
4. Nursing Home Bound
a. Reverse Halloween Party (Tom Toth) – Tom will be organizing the pre-K children of KBC for a trip to a local nursing home. There, the children will dress up in their Halloween costumes and instead of the seniors handing out treats to the kids, the kids will hand out goodie bags that were previously assembled that include personal hygiene products, hand-made pictures from the children, etc.
b. Singing Program (Amelia Huddleston) – Amelia will be responsible for taking the 2nd – 5th graders to the same nursing home for a singing presentation for the senior citizens.
Door-to-Door (PROJECT LEADER NEEDED) – This project will take a group of volunteers to a specified Kirkwood neighborhood and perform basic household chores such as changing light bulbs, providing batteries for smoke detectors, simple yard work, etc.
Recycling (Dermot Williams) – This project will be held on KBC grounds. Visitors will bring old computer equipment, batteries, small appliances, etc. and drive around to the back parking lot and drop off their recycling. There, a group of volunteers will collect these items and then deliver them to an organization that refurbishes salvageable electronics and then donate them
to needy families. The remaining items will be recycled rather than ending up in a landfill.
Music Fest/Block Party (Cecelia Stearman and Keith Stockberger) – What a great way to end the day…Cecelia and Keith are putting together a Community Gospel Choir, as we speak, to showcase on October 13th. This concert will be held at 4pm that day, so everyone participating in the day’s events can come and enjoy.
Food Booth for Music Fest (Daniel Johnson) – This project will take a few volunteers to the evening music fest and pop popcorn and hand out soda and water to the concert goers.
Prayer Requests (Caroline Penberthy) – During each project, a simple prayer request card will be handed out to the Kirkwood community. These cards will be collected and delivered to Caroline’s group. This group will be responsible for making sure all the prayer requests are met and that a note stating that someone is praying for them will be sent to the requestor. Also, a small group will be traveling to Manor Grove with the children to pray and visit with the residents.
Winterize Car Check List (Bob Starkey) – Bob and his group will be on-site in the back parking lot inspecting cars and providing them with a car check list of items to follow up with their local mechanic. Windshield wiper fluid will be topped off and tires will be checked.
Clean-up Kirkwood (Glen Calvin) – This project will take a group of volunteers to the downtown Kirkwood business district. There, volunteers will “spruce up” the area by sweeping, picking up trash, washing windows, etc. Also, volunteers will hand out Krispy Kreme donuts that were donated to our project.
Great Hall Activities (Kelly Clutes/Jennifer Stambaugh) – Jennifer and Kelly will be organizing a large group of volunteers in the Great Hall. A variety of activities for visiting children as well as our own children will be offered such as crafts, face painting, music, storytelling, etc. Even a bounce house will be set up in the Great Hall for the little ones. In the parking lot directly adjacent to the Great Hall will be a vehicle fair with a fire truck, police car and a moving van.
Helping Hands (Jon Hickman) – This project will take volunteers to various businesses in Kirkwood and offering random services for the residents. Services such as handing out quarters at a local laundromat, helping a customer out with their groceries at a grocery store or helping patrons pump gas and top off their wiper fluid at a local gas station.
Traffic Control (PROJECT LEADER NEEDED) – This project will need a group of volunteers to help direct the traffic flow around KBC. With all the projects that will be held here and all the little children visiting, we need to make sure everyone is safe.
Child Care - Babies (Trish Jackson/Debie Pesek) – Trish and Debbie will need a group of volunteers to help watch our little ones as we go out into the community that day.
Child Care – 1yr and up (Chris Henry) – Chris will need a group of volunteers to help watch our little ones as we go out into the community that day.
Outreach Lunch (Daniel Johnson) – A small group of volunteers will be needed to prepare lunch to all the visitors that we will be having on-site. Hotdogs will be prepared and chips and drinks will be provided.
Internal Breakfast (Don Willis) – Don and his group will be preparing breakfast for all of our volunteers.
Internal Lunch (Lorre Willis) – Lorre and her group will be preparing lunches for all of our volunteers. Drivers will be needed to deliver lunches to our off-site volunteers.
All volunteers will gather in the sanctuary at 8:00 am for a blessing. Breakfast will also be provided. All projects begin at 9:00 am on October 13th unless otherwise noted.
